Civil Penalties for Australia's Consumer Protection Provisions

Breaches of Australia's consumer protection laws are currently subject to criminal penalties.

These penalty arrangements are currently under review by the Ministerial Council on Consumer Affairs.

Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments want to hear your views on the options for reforming these arrangements- in particular, whether civil penalties should be adopted, either in parallel to criminal penalties, or as a substitute for them.

A discussion paper is available for download or by calling (02) 6263 2027.

The submission period closed on 2 December 2005. Submissions received have been published on this website.
