Australian Consumer Survey

The second Australian Consumer Survey ran from November 2015 to February 2016 with responses from consumers and businesses.

It assessed the impact of the Australian Consumer Law 5-years after the first survey in 2010–11.

Key findings

The second report highlights:

  • awareness of consumer protection laws remain high
  • consumers feel more empowered to resolve disputes
  • consumers believe there is more rigorous enforcement of the law
  • decrease in consumer problems
  • decrease in business compliance costs.

Benchmarks

The first survey established the benchmarks of:

  • consumer and business awareness of consumer protection laws
  • trends in consumer and business behaviour
  • current and potential areas of consumer detriment and
  • future considerations.

Survey responses

In November 2015, online and telephone consumer surveys received 5,408 responses.

In February 2016, the telephone business survey received 1,210 responses.

Australian Consumer Survey

The Australian Consumer Survey is the national baseline study to evaluate the Australian Consumer Law's impact on consumers and businesses.

The survey was jointly commissioned by the Australian, state and territory governments.
